The Importance of Inclusive Period Products

Not only women menstruate.

For years advertisements and packaging for period products have only been directed at cis women. Finally, the companies that make or sell these products are realizing that their target market is not always cis females.

Superdrug has recently released sanitary products for ‘people who menstruate’.

“When writing the copy for the products, we were aware that there could be customers of this range who are currently transitioning from one sex to another, or who identify as non-binary but will still be menstruating, alongside the women that use the products. We therefore felt ‘person’ was a more inclusive noun to use than ‘woman’.”

The Luna range from Superdrug not only uses inclusive language but the sanitary towels are made from plant-based, organic materials.

Superdrug builds on its pioneering take on the beauty world, in 2018 they initiated the ‘Beauty Without Bias’ pop up shop which celebrates how their makeup brands have embraced inclusivity and diversity.

We believe that offering an inclusive environment for our diverse and beautiful colleagues to work, and customers to shop is key and look out for more from the Beauty Without Bias campaign this year.

With a shift towards more inclusive language being used on the packaging of the Luna range, hopefully, this will spur on other companies to do the same. One day companies will move away from the exclusive language, such as ‘feminine products’, ‘feminine hygiene’ etc. It has not been long since the first advertisement to show not only cis women aired, Womb Stories from Bodyform.
